Tips and Tricks for Layering

For most, figuring out how to mix and match different pieces and create one cohesive look can be challenging. On top of that, trying to layer up pieces, but not create a bulky look can be hard to navigate. Instead of getting overwhelmed by "rules and regulations," just keep three simple tricks in mind when trying to put together a perfectly layered #fallAF outfit:

1. Contrasting.
This includes textures, patterns and colors. For this outfit, I mixed a variety of warmer tones and then threw in one cool tone jacket. In the same way, my dress is extremely textured with a lace overlay and my scarf has an intricate weave, but then my jacket is smooth and simple. You want to contrast pieces within your look otherwise your look can be overwhelming and tacky or, on the opposite end, underwhelming and boring.

2. Utilize accessories.
Use your scarfs, necklaces, socks and belts. Throw in one multi-colored piece if the rest of the outfit is singular in color, like I did in my last blog post where I paired a bright scarf with a black coat (see here). You can also wear knee high socks over a pair of tights to layer on your legs. You can also draw the eye to your waist and keep layering flattering by adding a belt.

3. Keep under layers tight.

A final tip to help keep your look from becoming bulky is to keep the undermost layers tighter and then work your way to a looser fit. Have a tight shirt and skinny jeans at the base, add a jacket that flatters your figure, but isn’t hip hugging, then end with a puffy scarf that takes up more space or length. If you go the opposite order, it will not only make you look bigger, but if you think about it, it would look ridiculous to have a huge sweater and put a thin cardigan over that.
